"I was stunned and angry and honestly a bit hurt. I made it clear to him, as did two CIA directors, that he did not have the authority to make a decision to destroy those tapes. [He] disobeyed orders."

John Rizzo, CIA’s top legal counsel, on the deletion of waterboarding tapes by Jose Rodriguez, former head of the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center.

Rodriguez says:

I was honoured to serve my country after the 9/11 attacks. I am proud of the decisions that I took including the destruction of the tapes to protect the people who worked for me. I have no regrets.

Rephrase this to: “I don’t care if I deleted evidence of illegal torture and brutal extraction of ‘information’ from ‘suspects.’ This is how things are done. Stop your bitchin’.”
